The Child and Family Psychology Clinic is a specialist centre operated by the Parenting and Family Support Centre in the School of Psychology at The University of Queensland. All programs are provided by experienced clinical psychologists or psychologists undertaking advanced level training in clinical psychology at The University of Queensland.
The Child and Family Psychology Clinic provides assistance for parents who are concerned with their child's behaviour or emotional adjustment. The clinic offers specialist clinical psychology assistance and practical parenting information, advice and support for parents of children of all ages, from infants to teenagers. The types of concerns that parents seek assistance for include:
The Child and Family Psychology Clinic offers a range of programs that have been carefully trialled and tested, including the internationally recognised Triple P - Positive Parenting Program.
Triple P provides a mix-and-match menu of materials, forms of delivery, levels of practitioner support that enable parents to choose the level of information and kinds of assistance most useful to their family and to them.
Personal consultation is available from Psychologists who are accredited in the provision of Triple P. All services are tailored to the needs of each participating family. Individual programs can address specific concerns about child or teen behaviour and development, or can focus on intensive training in positive parenting skills.
Group Triple P is offered in two forms: four weekly evening sessions or a single Saturday workshop. Both versions are followed up by four weekly telephone calls to help parents tailor the program to their family's needs. Groups are conducted for parents of children (0-10 years) and teenagers (10-16 years). Groups for parents of children with specific needs (e.g. parents of children with ADHD) are also available.
Where serious child behaviour, or parent coping problems exist, more intensive support is available. Stepping Stones Triple P is available for parents of children with disabilities such as Autism or Downs Syndrome.
Self-Directed Triple P involves a 10-week self-help program containing a series of set readings and homework tasks. If desired, parents can also access brief, weekly telephone sessions for additional support.
The Parenting and Family Support Centre offers a range of 90-minute seminars that provide an introduction to the principles of positive parenting and suggest practical strategies for everyday parenting situations. These seminars are frequently held at child-care centres, schools and community organizations.
The Child and Family Psychology Clinic operates on a fee-for-service basis. Contact the Clinic for information on the current fee schedule.
