Child and Family Psychology Clinic

Welcome to the Child and Family Psychology Clinic — “Providing high-quality psychological services to families since 1996”

The Child and Family Psychology Clinic is a specialist centre operated by the Parenting and Family Support Centre in the School of Psychology at The University of Queensland. All programs are provided by experienced clinical psychologists or psychologists undertaking advanced level training in clinical psychology at The University of Queensland.

The Child and Family Psychology Clinic provides assistance for parents who are concerned with their child's behaviour or emotional adjustment. The clinic offers specialist clinical psychology assistance and practical parenting information, advice and support for parents of children of all ages, from infants to teenagers. The types of concerns that parents seek assistance for include:

  • Infant problems such as persistent crying or sleeping difficulties
  • Toddler concerns such as tantrums, non-compliance, or mealtime difficulties
  • Preschool difficulties such as aggression, fears, nightmares, or bed-wetting
  • Primary schooler problems such as bullying, low self-esteem, or homework difficulties
  • Teenage behaviour concerns such as dating, peer relationships, depression, or anxiety
  • Problems specific to children with disabilities such as Attention Deficit Disorder, Asperger's Syndrome, or Downs Syndrome
  • Assessment for learning difficulties or school adjustment problems
  • Concerns with marital conflict or marriage separation
  • Parental depression, anxiety, or stress

The Child and Family Psychology Clinic offers a range of programs that have been carefully trialled and tested, including the internationally recognised Triple P - Positive Parenting Program.

Triple P provides a mix-and-match menu of materials, forms of delivery, levels of practitioner support that enable parents to choose the level of information and kinds of assistance most useful to their family and to them.

Treatment at the Child and Family Psychology Clinic is provided by both registered private practice psychologists and intern psychologists who are currently undertaking advanced postgraduate study in Clinical Psychology (including Masters, Professional Doctorate, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees). All intern psychologists are provisionally registered with the Queensland Registration Board, and receive regular professional supervision from fully qualified, senior Clinical Psychologists.

The Child and Family Psychology Clinic also conducts research aimed at improving our understanding of psychological difficulties in children and families, and how best to treat them. Occasionally a referred client may be offered the opportunity to participate in research projects. At no time are treatment services contingent on clients agreeing to participate in research, and all information gathered for research purposes remains confidential.
